Raising and Falling intonation

Raising and Falling Intonation

In English, rising and falling intonation refers to the variation in the pitch of the voice at the end of a sentence or in certain sections of a sentence. These variations help to communicate the speaker's meanings, feelings and intentions.

Raising intonation

The vocal pitch rises at the conclusion of the sentence.

Example

Are you serious?
We have milk, eggs, sugar...

Falling intonation

The tone of voice decreases at the end of the sentence.

Example

I like pets
What are you doing?
